Well, I was originally planning on taking the train into Chicago to
see this show but with the Cubs out of the Playoffs there would be no problem finding parking. The newspapers
and the Vic's website said that the show started at 7 pm and I planned it just right and got to the Vic at about 10
minutes to 7.
However, while I was standing in line I overheard someone say that Amon Amarth was onstage already
and that they started the show at 6. So, I missed Goatwhore's set and most of Amon Amarth's set. But I've
seem them play a few times so it really wasn't that big of a deal for me that I missed them. On my way
inside I saw Peter from Vader standing outside and I went up to him and said hello and that I was looking
forward to seeing them play. And off I went to catch the rest of Amon Amarth.
After Amon Amarth finshed playing, they sounded good as usual, I saw a couple friends of mine and we
hung out in the front of the venue to look at merchandise while waiting for Vader to come on. We wanted
to get Goatwhore's new CD and a Vader shirt but the only one's selling anything was Nile and Kreator.
Vader has arrived! We headed up to the front of the stage when we heard Vader begin their set. These guys
just keep getting better everytime I see them. There must be something in the water over there in Poland that
makes them so good. Or as Doc told me after their set, "It's the beer." They sounded really good and a lot of
people from Poland that live here in Chicago came to the show to support their comrades. And many beautiful
Poilsh women too! They played for about 30 minutes and mostly played newer songs. They then played
Carnal from the Black to the Blind album and segued right into a cover song of Slayer's Reign In Blood to
close out their set. The crowd was really into a frenzy when they heard the first chords to Reign in Blood.
Great way to finish their show.
Next up was the band I was looking forward to the most, Kreator. Out of the three mighty thrash bands from
Germany; Sodom, Destruction, and Kreator, they are by far my favorite one. They opened up their set with the
song Violent Revolution. The rest of their set included the likes of: Terrible Certainty, Betrayer, All of the Same
Blood, Pleasure to Kill, Reconquering the Throne, and Flag of Hate. These guys sounded awesome and sound
just like it's still the 80's. Mille said "Yes, this is the way I remember Chicago. I want to see you moshing from
end to end for this one, Extreme Aggression." And the crowd did what they were told and there was a mosh pit
going from one side of the stage to the other. They put on one hell of a show and played for an hour.
The Egyptologists were the last band to perform for the evening. Nile proved that they are one of the best death
metal bands from the U.S. They played for a little bit over an hour and it sounded great. They played a bunch of
songs from In Their Darkened Shrines including Unas Slayer of the Gods. They also played The Howling of the
Jinn from the Amonst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka album. Off of the Black Seeds of Vengeance album they
played Chapter For Transforming Into A Snake and closed off their set with Black Seeds of Vengeance. What a
great way to end the night with that song, one of my favorites by them.
