We left about five and got to Boulder at six. After getting food, it was about seven, and we got in line. It wasn't really a line; everyone was just milling outside the theater. There was a jazz band playing in a bar next door, and I went in to check them out, and they were very good. None of the metalheads outside seemed interested, which surprised me a little. I usually think of metalheads as having broader tastes in music. Doors opened on time at eight. There were no barriers, so I got right up front and center. My head was right between the center stage monitors. Sentenced came on almost right away, and played an impressive, energetic set. Ville was dripping beer on me throught the whole set. They played five or six songs and took off. After the Sentenced set, I noticed some tension between the metalheads and the hardcore fans who had come for Killswitch. A few shoving matches broke out, but nothing serious, and no one got kicked out. The rest of the crowd was pretty friendly, which is a change from metal shows I've been to in Denver. I was really exited about DT, since after Damage Done I thought they should be headlining, and they didn't let me down. They opened with 'The Wonders At Your Feet'. Mikael's microphone wasn't working, so he hunkered down on stage between me and a friend and screamed his ass off right in our faces until they fixed it. They put on an incredible set with a great song selection and massive stage presence. Mikael was throwing everything he had into it. I really wish they'd played a longer set. I went off to the left wing for Killswitch. They were better than I thought they'd be; they reminded me a little of Shadow's Fall at times, but it wasn't anything I'd mind missing. The crowd was really violent. People were throwing punches in the pit, and trampling people when they went down. Pretty stupid. In Flames came on, and I managed to secure my position up front. They came out in white jumpsuits and opened with the first song off Clayman (the name escapes me). Anders was clearly drunk off his ass, but he still did a pretty good job. One of his intros was, "Okay, now were going to play the first... title... ... Clayman... from the new album! Yeah!" And then they launched into 'Ordinary Story'. The crowd went nuts for the new stuff (especially 'Cloud Connected', which was pretty cool live), but not so much for the older songs like 'Gyroscope'. The sound throughout the night was great, and the transitions between bands were only abut 15 minutes. In Flames took a little longer. When we left, three of the guys from DT were in the lobby, and I thanked them for coming to the States and putting on an incredible show. They were very friendly and appreciative, and said that they planned on coming back soon. I don't plan to miss them, since they were easily the best band of the evening. |
