Opeth/Paradise Lost/Tapping The Vein

Wasn't as cold as last night, which is good, because it's a long way up the hill from where we parked. We ate at the Sink, as we usually do up in Boulder, and got in line. Doors opened a little late, but still pretty close to 8:00. It was hard to find a good spot, since everyone was there to see Opeth and had already crowded the front.

After an hour (30 minutes more than scheduled), Tapping the Vein was up, playing predictable but very competent goth metal with some aggressive industrial touches. Definitely one of the better opening shows I've seen, and the crowd seemed to appreciate it.

Another 40 minutes, and Paradise Lost came out. I was hyped, since I've been a long time fan, especially of their newer work. The rest of the crowd seemed equally excited, which surprised me, since their newer albums seem widely disliked by the metal community. There was a violent mosh pit throughout their set, which was extremely lame. Paradise Lost should not be moshed to. Some of the guys in the pit were just running around throwing punches, and ended up getting ejected. They mostly played songs from Symbol of Life and One second, so they must have recognized how difficult Host and Believe in Nothing are to find in the States when they designed the set list. They played a few from those albums, and even threw in some of the older songs like Hallowed Ground and As I Die. Very tight and confident playing, but a little lacking in energy, except for one of the guitarists.

Yet another 40 minutes, and Opeth came out with Leper Affinity. The crowd was electric, and Opeth played with energy and power, dismissing many of the criticisms I'd heard from their last tour here. The sound was a little noisy, especially during the clean parts, but they came across perfectly, and Martin had probably the best live drum sound I've ever heard. They varied the songs slightly from the albums, and created a strong rapport with the crowd.

Tracklist as follows (not in order):

Leper Affinity
Advent
Creedence
Godhead's Lament
Bleak
Drapery Falls
Deliverence
A Fair Judgement

Demon of the Fall:

The mosh pit had died down during their set, but during the encore, everyone went nuts. They said that they'd be coming back for the Damnation tour, which is very good.

Great show all around, although the set changes took way too long, to say the least. I could not have been more impressed by Opeth, and I look forward to seeing them again.
