| Frediablo, the name may not sound familiar, but the bands he is in
might
ring a bell, srtike fear, or induce violent headbanging fits. As the
vocalist of highly regarded Grimfist and Deride, the guitarist of both
Necrophagia and Wurdulak, and the one-man death metal project Gorelord,
if
you enjoy underground metal, you know who he is. Frediablo took time out of his schedule to talk with me about the upcoming Gorelord release, Norwegian Chainsaw Massacre, his graphic design company, his new project, Chamber of Strength, and horror films. Don: Gorelord’s last album, “Zombie Suicide Part 666” was great, but since then, you’ve been extremely active in your other projects. How have you found time to record another Gorelord album with all of the bands you participate in? Frediablo: This new album has been a constant pain in the ass since I started writing it!! Don't get me wrong, it's been killer, but I have recorded pieces and bits here and there, and I have never really finished anything until now, and it feels fucking good, but the trip has been a nightmare in many ways. I can't complain though, cause no one forces me to do all these bands and projects, it's just my way of keeping each individual project/band pure, and I feel I have so much musical ideas and different levels within myself that I'd like to express, and if I was to limit myself to one band or project, half the ideas in my head would not have come to life, and that would have made me a sad and angry fuck to be around for sure.Don: The track, “The Rising of the Undead,” from the upcoming Gorelord album “Norwegian Chainsaw Massacre” is the most guttural and heavy song I have heard from Gorelord. The song seems to be more groove-orientated than previous material. What inspired “Norwegian Chainsaw Massacre” and what can Gorelord fans expect? Frediablo: On this album, I just wanted to create music that would destroy everything when being played live or on a large fucking monster stereo!! The album is packed with grooves and heavy as hell breakdowns, but it also has it's faster moments and the outback kind of shit going on. The vocals are more guttural, cause that just went better with the insanely downtuned (untuned) guitars, and I feel the music sounds bigger that way as well. It's definitely my favorite Gorelord album !!Don: One of my personal favorite things about Gorelord is your guitar sound. How do you achieve such a think and grinding sound? It’s almost the band’s trademark. Frediablo: I have always been a fan of thick fucking grinding guitar tones, and there is nothing I hate more than I shitty thin guitar sound... well, maybe a shitty drum sound is worse, but those 2 combined, and you're in a world of hurt.... unless you play real black metal, but for the type of music I play, a killer guitar sound is essential, and I have found that a lot of the punch and power is actually in the bass guitar. I tend to remove a lot of the bass from the guitar sound, and then record with a thick ass bass on top. I love bass and filthy raw recordings with a dirty sound.Don: With Gorelord, you handle the vocals, guitars, and bass duties. Who is handling the drums on “Norwegian Chainsaw Massacre”? Frediablo: Yours truly. The drums are in fact a drum machine, and I have programmed and done it all myself. I love fucking around with drum sounds and piecing it all together, and I spent a lot of time getting the right sound for this album, specially the snare drum. I love the high pitched piccolo drum sound, but they are so hard to get right when using a drum machine, or at least for me it was, but I found a sound I can live with eventually, and hopefully others can to? Believe it or not, I am actually a fan of the Lars Ulrich's snare drum sound on St.Anger, although his playing sucks, as well as everything else on that album, but the snare rules!!Don: Gorelord is a studio project, but you have made mention of bringing the band to the live stage. Any touring plans yet? If Gorelord were to tour, would you want a combined package with Necrophagia or Grimfist? Frediablo: Gorelord will play live for the first time in Norway next year. I will make an official announcement on the Gorelord website stating place and date as soon as it has been decided, but regarding Gorelord ever touring with Necrophagia or Grimfist? Hell no !!! That will never happen!! I will never put myself through a tour where I would have to play in 2 bands each fucking night. That would kill me, and the crowd would also be sick of seeing my ugly face all the time!!! One band maximum, cause that leaves more time for drinking!!!Don: On your website, you mention Gorelord’s next album will be a split with an unknown band. Why an unknown band and have you had any applicants yet? Frediablo: Why not? I am sick and tired of all these established acts spewing forth album after album, while the real talent and nerve is still unheard. I've not heard one album since Superjoint Ritual's debut album, that made me wanna headbang and mosh my ass off, except for when I dig deep into the underground and find all these unsigned bands making their music available for download through websites such as www.purevolume.com I have recently been listening to a band called FOUR BOLT MAIN, and they kick fucking ass, and they might be bigger than I'm aware off, but compared to most so-called big bands, they are not, and still they sound ten times better and kick ass !!! If by doing this can maybe give a struggling band a chance to expose themselves to a larger audience, and maybe gain a bigger fan base, I will be a happy man, and the best thing is that I decide if it's any good or not!!! So just keep sending those goddamn demos... I have had many applicants, and it seems the general interest is bigger than I was expecting, which is just a fucking bonus for me!!Don: DeMedia Design is your graphic design company and you are doing the artwork for Gorelord now. Are you doing any other band’s artwork too? How did this company form? Frediablo: DeMida Design is a design company started by myself and the always beautiful Aina Eliassen. Basically it started with me doing the artwork for some of my earlier projects and bands such as Soul Forsaken, Ave Sathanas and Svartpest, and quickly found that I could do this professionally, and also create artwork and designs for others rather than just my own shit. Right now, we do logos, cd/dvd/video covers, posters, postcards, t-shirt designs, portraits, flyers... I did the new Gorelord artwork, as well as the upcoming Gorelor/Wurdulak Split DVD, and the dvd cover for Necrophagia's Necrotorture/Sickness. I also did the cover for the Grimfist Ghouls Of Grandeur album, and basically I do all the artwork for any of my other musical involvements. Right now we are in the early stages of establishing ourselves, and I am currently re-designing the DeMida Design website with a much darker and professional look. I am currently making designs for soon to come Grimfist and Chamber Of Strength merchandise, and if anyone is in need of killer artwork, just email us at demida@hotmail.comDon: Wurdulak and Gorelord will be releasing a spilt DVD entitled “Drunk, Damned, and Decayed.” What is going to be on this DVD and when is it due? Frediablo: That fucking thing was supposed to be out ages ago, but due to problems creating menus and shit, it has been delayed, but now it looks like it's just around the corner, but I have no final release date yet, but that will be announced on the Gorelord website as soon as fuck!! Regarding what's on the fucker? Well, a lot of bullshit really!!! There is footage from the recording of the first Wurdulak album, Ceremony In Flames, videos from both Gorelord and Wurdulak, various drunken party footage etc, plus our gore film Butcher Bob will be on as a special bonus feature. It's been so long since I've seen it myself that I don't even remember what's on the bastard, but be shure to drink or be drunk while watching it!!!Don: You love horror. Ever hope that you will get to score a horror film? I can hear Gorelord’s music fitting well with a really tense and graphic horror film. Frediablo: Me and Fug scored Butcher Bob, and that was fun as hell!!! I would love to score a film, but I would never use heavy metal in a horror movie. I hate that shit. Dario Argento has made some of horror's best moments, but also some of the worst by using fucking metal music in his films. I love the scores that are creepy and moody... like the music in The Shining, or Cannibal Holocaust... I just shake my head every time a metal song starts pouring out of the speakers in the middle of a horror film. Often the best use of music in horror films, is not using music at all. Silence is always more scary than sound, unless it's Fug ripping wind!!!Don: What was your favorite horror film from 2004? Frediablo: Probably the remake of Dawn Of The Dead. I did not know what to expect from that movie, and usually remakes suck, so I didn't really have any high hopes, but I was pleasantly surprised, and considering all the other garbage they create these days labeled horror, it was definately one of the highlights for me man. I am a ral big fan of the Japanese horror tradition though.... films like The Grudge, The Ring, etc,... now that is some scary fucking shit. It's funny to see the lack of talent possessed by America/Hollywood when it comes to creating decent and original horror. They just make poor remakes of all the great foreign films, and it 9 out of ten it's nothing more than horrible and pathetic!!! Dawn Of The Dead was that 1 out of the 10 in my book !!!Don: Any word on Gorelord merchandise for the fans? Frediablo: I have some Gorelord t-shirt designs ready, and will print those for the release of the new album. I also have posters, postcards and shit planned, so we'll see how much when time comes.Don: Thanks for the interview and keep up the awesome work with Gorelord and your other projects. Do you have an exact release date for “Norwegian Chainsaw Massacre” yet and is there anything else you’d like to add? Frediablo: Thanks yourself... I don't have the final release date yet, but I'm guessing early/mid 2005, and in the meantime, check out Chamber Of Strength at http://home.no/cos and DeMida Design at http://home.no/demidadesign A NORWEGIAN CHAINSAW MASSACRE IS COMING SOOOOOOOOOOON!!! |
