Metal Coven: The new album is fast and vile, but it is the best sounding Impaled Nazarene album to date. Did the band aim for better production this time around?
Arc v 666: Of course we did, like we did try already on the 2 previous albums. Only this time the formula sat down almost perfectly in the studio as we knew what we want and because Anssi Kippo (co-producer) also knew how we want it to be done. It was thanx to him that the album came out so fucking tight, he did whip the wimpy shit out of us for good and change it to sheer terror and anger. We even had this "practice studio" in the studio where we were able to play together and check the songs before actual recordings and that was great, for the first time in IN history I guess....You can hear everyone put all the cards to the table when we recorded and we are damn proud of the result, of course.Metal Coven: How have the line-up changes affected the band? "All That You Fear" is probably your heaviest album to date. Arc v 666: It feels the same as taking the condom off in the middle of the intercourse, U know what I mean? The line up changes have had an enormous vital effect on the band, like changing Your blood or something. I'm a late joiner myself, but I can see how the old dogs have their tails up again and You can hear it from the past recordings, too not to mention how the band is live on stage these days!! I mean - - - You should hear and see, there's no mercy! I don't know if ATYF is the heaviest album, but sure is fastest and most professional album so far from us. There's more of that Black/ Death Metal vibe in it, so maybe that is it. The roots are showing.....Impaled Nazarene has been around for over 13 years and has had a lot of lineup changes, which is all healthy if You get to think of it that we never had to break up and make those sad comebacks, which seem to be so fucking trendy these days. It really feels that this line up is made to last, finally, and we are only getting better more we play together. I'm sure that our new guitarist Tuomio for example has many aces up his sleeve for the future recordings, he already wrote "Halo Of Flies" for ATYF just to give a hint of what will be coming.Metal Coven: Even though 'All That You Fear' is heavier than your past releases, there is more melody and more punk-influenced riffs on "All That You Fear". Do you think this will gain the band more fans? Arc v 666: Impaled Nazarene has always been "punky" or into hard core, so in that case I don't think it will be any news for the long term fans either. I'm myself much responsible for those punk spirited tracks on the new album and I had old IN albums in mind kind of a lot when I was writing these songs, trying to get the feel into them. Take a listen of "Violence I Crave" or "Motörpenis" from Latex Cult album for example....or the whole Latex Cult album, which is fucking great album with a lot of punk/ HC influence in it. The new one only differs from that as being done way more better.Metal Coven: You have lyrics in English and Finnish. Do you think a language barrier may turn off some fans? Arc v 666: We don't actually give a flying fuck for that thought when we add Finnish lyrics, which are very few per album by the way. If someone feels uncomfortable with them, that's their problem, not ours. So far there has not been any complains, so I guess it doesn't matter at all.Metal Coven: Do you ever get tired of all the comparisons to Motorhead and critics saying Impaled Nazarene is an eviler version of Motorhead? Arc v 666: That can only be an compliment and if someone see us that way it's perfectly ok with us. For me Lemmy is one of the greatest characters in the history of Heavy Metal and no one can't deny the importance of Motörhead either, so whatta hell!! I'm proud to be compared like that, even our stuff is quite far from Motörhead's to be honest with You, so it might just be in the ears of the critics. But You know the critics anyway.....a bunch of failed, bitter musicians who don't know shit about the bands, just pretending to do so. Not all of 'em of course, but in majority yes.Metal Coven: Mika has caught some heat from saying that he doesn't miss Teemu "Somnium" Raimorant because he was a slacker, but misses him as a friend. Has his statement negatively affected the band? Arc v 666: It seems all You fucking people out there didn't care to read Mika's comments carefully enough, but just jumped the gun straight away and gave him the shit! The message is simple; We all (not only Mika) don't miss his presence in the band as much as we do as a friend. In the band he was a disaster when it came up to something that had to be done, or if You had an time schedule in the picture, for example taking a flight and to be present at the airport, studio etc. He failed 8 and ½ times out of 10 to make it and that, believe or not, is nerve wrecking on a long term basis. Even Your question makes no sense: "..saying that he doesn't miss Teemu "Somnium" Raimorant because he was a slacker, but misses him as a friend". Errr........how can U miss and not to miss someone in the same sentence?? This is fucking bollox all the way through, we miss our friend a lot (all of us) and hopefully no one out there don't have to face the same shit as we did. The raw fact band wise, is that Somnium didn't participate much for IN in his time, cause he had his main band, Finntroll to take care of as well and You have to remember that he only wrote one song for the band, plus the whacky "Satan Wants You Dead" -all 16 seconds of it....He simply didn't have enough time for Impaled Nazarene and we kind of did benefit from how things sadly ended as the present line up is with all members 110% into the band.Metal Coven: Impaled Nazarene is one of the few extreme metal band from Finland. What do you think about all the popularity HIM is gaining in the states? Arc v 666: That is great! HIM guys are friends of us and they are doing fucking good, so what can You say?!? Exporting the Finnish music is always a good thing and they have a strong brand to sell. They have been huge here in Europe for few years already, so we are kind of used to it already. The main thing is that the guys are still the same as they were 10 years ago, before the HIM era. And they dig Impaled Nazarene so they can't be that bad, right?!?Metal Coven: Impaled Nazarene seems to love guns and booze. What is the bands gun and drink of choice? Arc v 666: Gun choice would be the 50 cal. Desert Eagle, just because it is one fucking bad ass gun to shoot with a lot of damage done. Me and Mika had an opportunity to try out that particular weapon last fall when we visited this one television show and they took us to the shooting range. That literally kicked some serious ass!! Drink choice would be beer, vodka and whiskey. Anything with alcohol goes of course, but those are the main ones.Metal Coven: Do you think of the current sate of perpetual war and terrorism in the world. Your last album "Absence of War." acted almost as a warning before the US- led wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Arc v 666: You know, Mika is a prophet actually...it wasn't the first time when his nostradamus-like prophecies came true. Personally I don't much think of the wars and shit, but Mika for sure is following the news of the world more eagerly. Anyway, You don't have to follow it to know it's all fucked up at the moment and surely it's only getting worse. With all the respect, America is been led by one of the biggest morons ever to walk this earth and he's very much responsible of the situation in the middle-east and more. I'm not into politics at all, that's for other people like Rage Against Machine *puke*. I'm into playing our music which is pretty much all I do care of, besides of alcohol and pussy. One man or one thousand men can't do shit for what is going on, so why to stress about it? Not my business.Metal Coven: 10 years and going strong. What does the future have in store for Impaled Nazarene? Arc v 666: 13+ and going strong .. . .the future holds touring in Europe and as it seems, in South America also in August if things will go as planned. We have plans of recording the first ever live album in the next fall time and that would happen here in Helsinki, Finland. We are constantly writing riffs and bits and pieces to gather them later on as the next studio album, somewhere in the future. There's no future without Impaled Nazarene and we are only getting stronger!! |
