Don: Rumour has it that Midvinter is returning and with a new album. Has Midvinter reformed? Who is in the band? And when will we see the follow up to 1998's "At The Sight Of The Apocalypse Dragon"?
Tobbe: A new album is at least thought of but first of all there will be a ltd. ed. Re-release of the demo “Midvinternatt” with some covers and two or three brand new tracks as bonus. With that we’ll see if there’s still an interest in the band from the old and maybe new fans and most of all, if we ourselves are interested in doing a complete new album. At this point it’s just me and Damien in the band and we won’t use any more people at least not to start with, maybe one could call it a reforming of the band but I think we know that better after the re-release, we’re not in a hurry there has been some years already so…
Don: After six years, is the fan base still there? Has the band experienced more a a cult status?
Tobbe: I don’t think we still have a fan base, maybe someone still remembers us but that’s not what we think about when doing this, me and Damien has been talking about making some new shit for quite some time but both of us has been very busy with other stuff. Cult status? Nah, that would be strange I think…
Don: Has the band updated it's sound?
Tobbe: Judging from the raw material that Damien have sent me it’s still sounding like the same band. Just more mature and focused… We have more varied influences nowadays so sure it’s “updated” but I think people who have heard the old material will recognize the good old sound.
Don: Has the six-year absence strengthened the band?
Tobbe: Not at all, it killed the band… ha ha. But it has strengthened us as individuals, and that’s more important.
Don: Why did Midvinter virtually disappear after praise of both the demo (Midvinternatt) and the debut album? A lot of Internet bios seem to point blame at Damien for Midvinter's disappearance.
Tobbe: Sure it was Damien’s fault, it’s always him causing all the trouble. He’s been out of Sweden for several years and I’m not really sure where he’s living now either as we only communicate via Internet… As Damien is the driving force in Midvinter, and has always been, it’s always up to him when and if we’ll do something new. At some points he have told me to use the name if I want to do something without him but that wouldn’t be “Midvinter”, Midvinter is nothing without Damien.
Don: One Internet bio claimed Midvinter's cult status to a lot of "impossible" and "hilarious" occurrences. But the site failed to explain exactly what was impossible and hilarious. Can you expand on this statement? Exactly how did Midvinter gain such a cult status?
Tobbe: Well, it’s really hard to explain everything that happened back in those days, and I won’t even try. We’ll try to get a webpage up instead with all this old “moments” soon so everybody can read it there. But just the thing that the band formed when Damien and the old vocalist Björn happened to take the wrong train in Stockholm after being on a trip to Norway and ending up in the very north of Sweden and relocated there for some years. But when they walked around in town they ran into an old friend of Damien (Nisse who owns Ballerina Audio where bands like Setherial and Naglfar among others have recorded albums the last decade) and he asked what the hell they were doing there Björn simply said that they were there to record a demo in his studio and that was something like the “birth” of Midvinter. And again, I don’t think Midvinter has a “cult” status, but if someone think so it’s nothing that will bother me…
Don: Will the famed 4-track cover EP ever see the light of day?
Tobbe: Probably not, some of those tracks intended for the EP will end up on the re-release of the demo though.
Don: How did Midvinter get Andy LaRoque to produce "At The Sight Of The Apocalypse Dragon"?
Tobbe: Andy owns “Los Angered Recordings” were the album is recorded so we just booked time in his studio, not harder than that.
Don: You are the owner of Near Dark Productions and MetalFortress.com. Tell us about them and will either of these companies release the new Midvinter album?
Tobbe: Near Dark is dead, that’s why I formed Metal Fortress instead to go on and release quality metal of all styles. The re-release of the “Midvinternatt” will be a MFE release but I hope we can get a bigger label to release an upcoming album if we’ll do one.
Don: Anything else you'd like to add?
Tobbe: Thanks a lot for the support. Check out www.metalfortress.com for news concerning the label and also some news about Midvinter will be added there in the future. Total genocide!
