| Misery Index is a band that I absolutely adore. Their mastery of metal
is
almost unmatched. However, while they are making headway, this
talented
band deserves more attention from the metal journalists and
appreciation
from the metal enthusiasts. I recently got a change to harass
bassist/vocalist Jason Netherton about the band, tour stops in
Michigan, the
new EP, politics and the future of Misery Index. Not only did he
enlighten
me, but also proved me wrong. If you haven’t heard Misery Index, do so now. You shall not be disappointed. Don: Misery Index just got back from the road. How was the tour with Napalm Death? Jason: That went great, they are not only legends in this scene, but were simply one of the most down to earth and sincere bands I think we have ever toured with. They are still very much fans of the music they play and it showed every night when they just let it rip. It was certainly a high point of my personal music journey, and hopefully we can do it again with them cause it was just too brief.Don: Sorry, I have to get this off my chest. If Misery Index is always be on the road, how come you guys never stop for a date in Michigan??? This Michigander feels like Misery Index is shunning the state. Is it because Kid Rock, Eminem, and ICP are from this state that it seems Michiganders just like crappy rap? Correct me if I am wrong, but I’ve never seen a MI date since the band started. Jason: Hmm, I think we played there twice in 2003, once in Detroit (with Dying Fetus) and once in Lansing (with Kenshiro). It was a good time and yeah you are correct we need to get back there. A lot of the time its just out of our hands cause we sometimes accept tours through booking agents and if they can not negotiate a show for a club or with a promoter in a certain area they just look elsewhere. Sometimes we can book DIY gigs (like we did when we played in Lansing) and get up there for a one-off, and I guess we need to make that happen again soon.Don: I’ve always considered Misery Index as much more of a grind band than death metal. Do you agree with me or am I full of it? Jason: We are probably more of a metal band than grind band, grindcore purists certainly would cite our use of melody and more traditional song structures as evidence of our metal and death metal leanings. I do think however that we blend both styles evenly and use the elements of each to make songs that might be identifiably Misery Index, our approach is to take what we like from both scenes, as well as hardcore crust/punk, and write songs that we would like to hear.Don: “Dissent,” the new EP. Tell me about the reasoning behind the 4-parttitle track and the hints of melody? It sounds like progression in the right direction. Jason: The four part title track (really four separate songs) just kind of grew from the fact that all the lyrical content for those four was along the same lines, so they were grouped together to give the EP more of a singular identity as an EP.Don: Scott Hull of Pig Destroyer fame produced Dissent. Will he do any more production work with the band in the future? Jason: He actually just mastered the CD, it was recorded and produced by Eyal Levi (Daath) at Hairy Breakfast Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. I think we might go back to Eyal again, we shall see what happens, we also would like to work with Scott again, he certainly brightened up the sound and brought the levels into line, we are very happy with both of their work!Don: What do Misery Index have planned for the next full-length? You guys keep getting write-ups in past album reviews that state or elude that band will be the next big thing in the extreme metal scene. Is Misery Index poised to conquer? Jason: I am not sure when the next album will be recorded, we still feel like a lot of work needs to be done in promoting ˜Retaliate.” It came out about 14 months ago and many people still do not know who we are or have even heard us. Its going to take a lot more touring and effort on our part and right now we just need to keep getting the word out pushing what we already have to offer before we think about promoting another album. So I guess and next-big-thing is going to have to wait a bit.Don: Odd question: How do former members keep re-appearing? Mike Harrison helps out on the tours once in awhile and Kevin Talley was back for a while now he is gone again. Obviously there is not enough bad blood to prevent reappearances, but why don’t they just stick with you and Sparky? Jason: We have had people in this band who say one thing and then change their mind the next, we appreciate their help in keeping us afloat and making tours happen, but it has only been recently that we have found the right people who want to be a part of the band for the right reasons, who are not indecisive and want to play grind/death metal music for music’s sake, and not just go along for the ride. Nevertheless, we love and appreciate all the guys who have been in the band and we look forward to working with Adam Jarvis now.Don: How is the new drummer, Adam Jarvis, working out? Jason: He is a machine, and working out great. Like I said, Adam is the right person who is giving us confidence to move forward, a great drummer and a great person, and we really look forward to recording, touring and everything else.Don: I see on the website the band is looking for another guitarist/vocalist. Any applications yet? Jason: We have had some great applicants and they all demonstrated great skill, and I think we will probably be making a decision in the coming weeks.Don: Former Presidential hopeful John Kerry was talking about “the misery index of the middle class” this past summer and fall. Did you guys see an increase in album sales because of all the name-dropping? I remember Anthrax became more noticeable a few years back after all the powder-enhanced mailings Jason: No, I did get an email from some news media person that was asking my opinion of the entire thing, I replied, but heard or saw nothing of it. Anyways, I guess the term has been around since the 70ss and its well known to economists, now we want to make it more well known among extreme music fans (!)Don: Okay, back to serious stuff: What is in store for Misery Index’s future? Is the band still signed to Nuclear Blast? Jason: Yes we are still signed to them for our full length albums, we may or may not be putting out more EPs before the next full length on our own label, it depends on their release schedule and the speed of our songwriting capabilities.Don: Misery Index is very accessible. You handle all the merchandise sales, right? And Sparky handles booking? Do you think the Do-It-Yourself attitude helps the band? Jason: Correct, we handle everything, it is more our style and preference to be directly involved in everything and be as closely connected to the people who like the music as possible. We come from a background that has a strong DIY ethic in the Washington DC/ Baltimore area, and we strongly believe in DIY values and their importance to creating positive music scenes for the bands and people who enjoy them.Don: Misery Index talks politics in the lyrics yet the band show serious class by not just mouthing off. Do you think that when musicians/entertainers sign up for a certain cause/politician that they limit themselves and dull the potency of their intended message? Jason: I think that each person should be as directly involved as they feel like, and musicians sometimes can give a voice to ideas and opinions that are felt by many who have no way to express themselves on a larger platform, and the musicians who realize this, reflect these ideas and opinions in their music and lyrics, and in the larger society as a whole if they have the capability. People complain that musicians should not talk about politics because they have no business in such things as entertainers, but I disagree, because before anyone is a musician in any country they are first and foremost a citizen, and every citizen has the right to speak out what they think and believe, why should such rights not extend to everyone?Don: I have a request: Misery Index has covered Terrorizer and Brutal Truth in the past. How about some Bolt Thrower? Jason: I could see that in the future, that’s certainly one of my all time favorite bands, it shall come soon!Don: Thanks for granting me an interview so soon after a tour. Any thing you’d like to add? Jason: Thanks Don and have a great new year! |
