Creating massive slabs of wonderful instrumental metal whilst culling influences from genres as different as doom and indie rock, Pelican have been turning heads with their unique take on heavy music. After touring the U.S. with Opeth and most recently as a part of the Taste of Chaos tour, Pelican are readying themselves for a headlining U.S. tour.
Phil: First of all, you're just about at the end of your stint on the Taste of Chaos tour, so how's it been for you guys?
Laurent: It's been really good, surprisingly. I think we went into this tour with low expectations in terms of how well we'd go over with the crowd and whether or not the other bands would like us, but right away, everyone was cool; it's just been a very functional and friendly operation all along and I think that a lot of people are walking away kind of confused from watching us, but some people are obviously liking it. And that's why we did this, 'cause sometimes you've got to do tours that don't really make that much sense, just to try to reach people who otherwise wouldn't find you.
Phil: This was an interesting tour because there's a little bit of everything for everybody.
Laurent: Yeah, it's pretty diverse, even though it fits mostly under the roster of pretty commercial hardcore and metal.
Phil: Okay, your upcoming headlining tour with Mono; how is this going to compare with the Japanese tour that you did with them awhile back?
Laurent: It won't be in Japan, that's the first thing. (laughter) It will be six weeks and not four days and all around it's going to be really different, just 'cause Japanese audiences are really different. We've done tours in the States before, so it won't be quite as exotic. It's a co-headlining tour with one of our favorite bands, things have been going well this last year, so I think it's going to be a really great tour.
Phil: Alright, when are we going to see a reissue of the DVD?
Laurent: You're not. But we are doing a new one, so that's good.
Phil: So your website lied to us then! (laughter)
Laurent: Well, no, it's actually been reissued, but it's done already; it's gone. It moved kinda quickly. We didn't want there to be that many copies of it, just because it's okay. It's just a DVD; it's one show, it's one document and it's old. But we played in London last year around Christmas and Justin Broderick from Godflesh did sound for us that night, recorded the show, we tracked it with seven cameras; it's sick. It looks really cool. It's like an 80's thrash video; there's close-ups of solos and stuff. It's a completely different beast and we'll try to add some other stuff on there, like we taped the Taste of Chaos show two days ago in Long Beach and you know the classic Maiden record, our guitar player did the "Scream for me Long Beach" thing and the crowd went wild, so that was pretty cool.
Phil: Nice! (laughter)
Laurent: So stupid things like that will be on there, so it will be an all around better DVD package, I think.
Phil: Okay, what made you want to work for a charity like Shirts For A Cure?
Laurent: A guy who designed a few shirts for us awhile back asked if we could contribute a design to the cause and we were more than happy to do it, so we gave him the design and there it was.
Aaron: I'm just curious as to how the whole concept of Pelican came about.
Laurent: It's actually really simple, it's just four really good friends, we just like to play music together and make the most of the time we have on Earth. Three of us played in a band called Tusk and still do, which is a grind band; I'm the bass player in that band and I was starting to write stuff on guitar which didn't really fit for that band at all, so our drummer was like "why don't we do something on the side." So we just kind of got that started and eventually, it sort of bloomed into a completely different entity called Pelican and ended up taking over Tusk, just because we just had a lot more commitments and responsibilities; things happening more for Pelican than we did for Tusk.
Katie: Does Tusk have vocals?
Laurent: Yes.
Katie: Which one of you sings?
Laurent: This guy named Jody, who actually lives in Portland. He's a sea captain, so he's out at sea most of the time, so we can't really be a touring band, but we have two full lengths and a new one that we're doing right now.
Aaron: What were you guys listening to while you were recording this record? It seems to have a bit of everything that is melodic and it flows very nicely.
Laurent: Thanks. (laughter) All of us listen to really different things; I was probably listening to a lot of the gentleman's patches here. (referring to Phil's jacket) Like Dio, Saxon, Riot, other seventies hard rock stuff that I'm really a big fan of. The other guitar player's really into Jawbreaker, Bed Head and just really sort of melodic emo things.
Phil: Like Elliott?
Laurent: Yeah.
Phil: I can definitely hear a little bit of that in there.
Laurent: That's cool that you can hear that; Texas Is The Reason and that sort of stuff. Just sort of old school, before this whole scene sort of bloomed and became shitty.
Aaron: What can we expect from Pelican in the future?
Laurent: That new DVD in the fall and a new full length in the spring of 2007. Sorry it's pretty far off, but we've got two songs that are both really fast. It won't be as contemplatively slow as some of the other stuff that we've done. It's less in a post-rock sort of direction and more in a raging kind of direction. We're just touring a lot more; we've been home for maybe two months since July and the more time you spend on the road, the more you want to do stuff that's more up-tempo. I think playing with bands like Breather Resist, These Arms Are Snakes and Cave In, you're watching those guys and they're just flailing about the stage and you're "I want to do that!" (laughter)
Katie: You guys do have a lot of energy, though.
Laurent: I mean, you've got a half hour per day to do your thing; it's a lot to concentrate, getting rid of all this stress and energy that you have, so it comes out looking kind of maniacal, I'm sure.
Phil: Alright, I just have one last question; out of all your songs, which one has the lyrics that mean the most to you?
Laurent: The lyrics that mean the most to us... (laughter) they all think it's funny, but I'm trying to think of how to respond. (pause and even more laughter) I don't know; I don't even know what to say! (laughter)
Phil: Haven't been asked that one yet, have you? (laughter)
Laurent: No, actually and I'm pretty stumped. (laughter) Can you just say… (pause) I don't know. (laughter) I really don't.
Phil: We'll ask a question about zombies instead.
Laurent: Yes! Do it!
Phil: Okay, if you have sex with a zombie, as they are the living dead, is that necrophilia?
Laurent: (pauses) Can we talk about the Middle East instead? (laughter)
Katie: Now the real question is when you were done, would you keep her on a chain or would you kill her? (laughter) You can't just have a relationship with her, 'cause she'd be eating your brains; you have to keep her on a chain so you can play Nintendo with her sometimes. (laughter)
Laurent: I wouldn't have sex with a zombie because of the awkwardness of it all.
Phil: Okay, I think we're done then. (laughs) Okay, thank you!
