For
the uninitiated, the hot number known as Sherry Rubber
is the guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and chanteuse of
both Kommunity FK and Texylvania. For years this post-punk/rock
vixen has been puncturing eardrums and even searing hearts.
Sherry gives us the straight dope on all things in the
Kommunity and Texylvania. So boys, crank up the volume
and watch out for her boots.
DON: So Texylvania is a side project from member of
Kommunity FK that formed in 1998. Here we are in 2006,
it seems like this is more than just a side project. Please
explain how the band as continued on as a side project
for so long?
SHERRI RUBBER: Texylvania grew into its own animal.
I myself come from a hardcore punk background. The first
band I ever started was out of Seattle and I was chosen
by Kerrang Magazine out of England to be their featured
pin up girl known as 'The Kerrang Lady Killer' before
I was old enough to legally drink. I was then the lead
guitarist/song writer/founding member for the Hollywood
chick band "Raw Flower" in the early 90's. We were always
referred to the 'illegitimate daughters of Iggy Pop'
as 'pick of the week in the LA Weekly' way before all
this 'chick band' shit you see nowadays. I then went
back home to Seattle and formed my next creation 'Rubber".
I was the founding member/sole song writer/lead vocalist/lead
guitarist/booked all the shows for this three-piece
chick hardcore punk band in the mid '90s (we played
shows with Fear, The Business, The Varukers, DOA, DRI,
The Torture King.. …We were always being asked to play
with bands like the Dwarves….etc).
I was touring and recording in my own band Rubber when
I first met Patrik of Kommunity FK. I had been flown
into LA by XXX Records to write and record the second
album for the band Sister Goddamn. I turned down touring
Europe with Sister Goddamn opting to have Rubber play
dates in Hollywood. Patrik scouted a few of my shows
when I took Rubber touring in Los Angeles. Patrik asked
if I would like to try out for Kommunity FK and I did.
I have been Kommunity FK's lead guitarist for over a
decade now, but Patrik knew I was really missing playing
hardcore punk and singing lead...So, we formed Texylvania
so we could both get off. My old fan base soon discovered
Texylvania and the legions of Kommunity FK fans worldwide
loved Texylvania as well. To answer the question of
how did Texylvania survive so long is because we're
total pros that live daily for our music and our fans.
Texylvania's is still Patrik's and my side project-but
it is also our two-headed love child. I'm also a bit
on the mental side of things so I have to give equal
time to all my personalities that dwell inside my brain-Alter
egos, fucker-Tee/Hee!
DON: Odd band name... can you give some insight to the moniker?
SHERRY RUBBER: Patrik and I have booklets of band names we make up. When you're on the road it's a fun thing to do. We went with Texylvania because we felt it fit the music we
were writing at the time of the band's creation. I also felt it would be a good
way to integrate the Kommunity FK fan base with a bit of a "Transylvania" vibe.
DON: Has MySpace provided Texylvania with a chance to fall upon more ears?
SHERRY RUBBER: Yes it has. MySpace is a great venue for artists to communicate with their fans and vice versa. I only wish I could get a few more tunes up on the site. It's really hard just to pick four songs for the fans to hear because Texylvania's song roster is HUGE! I plan on rotating music every few months up on the Texylvania MySpace page so the kids can keep getting their rocks off.
DON: When I first heard Texylvania, I instantly heard intense punk rock with
rockabilly aesthetics. So is Texylvania more punk than rockabilly or more
rock than punk?
SHERRY RUBBER: Texylvania is way more punk than anything else. Patrik and I love keeping the sick psycho loner on a dark country road vibe mixed in with the hardest English Oi ever created. That's what so killer about Texylvania. It is another state of mind for the fans and us. We love the sexual interceded with the twisted demented psyche that comes from the essences of Texylvania. One minute we've got kids stage diving like mad to the hardest/angriest punk rock riffs and the next second the entire room of fans are covered in stage blood singing along to some saddened for longed doomed country serial killer's 'little ditty'.
DON: At times, I think there is something or a traditional rock/punk
and rockabilly revival currently going on with once sparse Reverend Horton
Heat shows being jam-packed and Hot Topic stocking more and more rock
merch. Where is Texylvania falling into all of this revival?
SHERRY RUBBER: That's really funny you mentioned the 'Reverend'. I opened up for him in Hollywood when he first started out in a club called 'Raji's (I also opened Body Count and a few other top artist at Raji's back in the day - Believe me a lot of your readers miss and love that club as much as we do). As far as a revival I don't even follow what is 'in' and what is 'out'. I've always just done what I do and I really feel that is the best way to go. If you want to be an artist then create art-don't mimic someone else just because the media says it's the cool thing to do. I feel sorry for the newer generations of music listeners out there because they actually fall for all of that crap. That's a big thing both Kommunity FK and Texylvania try to get across to all our fans-DO YOUR OWN THING/THINK THE WAY YOU WANT TO/CREATE WHAT NEEDS TO COME OUT OF YOU! As our song 'Cupcake' states: "Don't believe the hype man-It's all crap!" If Texylvania is falling into some rock revival that's cool - If not, no big...We just do what comes naturally - Tee/Hee.
DON: You've done quite a few tribute albums (Plasmatics, Johnny Cash, Alice Cooper, David Bowie), what is your approach to covering legendary artists' songs?
SHERRY RUBBER: We usually just go into the recording studio without ever rehearsing the song as a band. That way we keep the tracking real and raw. I want to have such a vibe of energy in the original artist piece that the artist who first wrote and performed the song will really enjoy what we laid down. I really want to thank the original artist and commemorate their artistic work. I really feel like songwriting has become a lost art. I think that all the sampling that is going on today is a total and shitty rip off that demeans music and rips off the music fans themselves.
DON: You've stated you are going out on tour with Kommunity FK shortly, and word on a Texylvania tour? Do both band ever tour together?
SHERRY RUBBER: Yes, Kommunity FK's first show on this tour will be at The Knitting Factory in Hollywood on July 5th 2006...Very exciting!!! I love touring!!! And yes, Texylvania does play on the Kommunity FK bills. Not every show, but it does happen...This way we know that Kommunity FK has a great opening act-ha/ha! What is nice is that on days off for Kommunity FK on the road we can always pick up a Texylvania show playing the punk venues...It's great! Texylvania is working out it's own deal with another indie label right now...SO, Texylvania will probably be out on it's own "Hexabilly" road run next spring...KILLER!!!
DON: Being a front woman, do you get a lot of men fawning over you at the shows? I hope no boxer shorts are landing on stage.
SHERRY RUBBER: I've gotten all sorts of gifts from men in person and on stage over the years...The biggest thing I get off on doing to guys is when they lick my boots when I'm on stage...It's silly, but it's fun! They can always move my amp for me...Tee/Hee! The only fucked part of that whole scene is that I have actually had to put out a couple of restraining orders out over the years...Nothing is too weird for me...I think I have seen it all, but don't fuck with my cats man!
DON: How often does Patrick FK take over the vocals?
SHERRY RUBBER: We try to go half and half. I usually sing lead a bit more than Patrik in the Texylvania sets...But while he is singing I get to play all the awesome leads...YES! Basically, Texylvania works like this...When I sing lead Patrik plays guitar...When Patrik sings Lead I play guitar. Comprende?
DON: What's instore for the future of Texylvania? New album?
SHERRI RUBBER: Oh yes...Like I mentioned before we are in the middle of releasing a new album with a killer Indie label here very soon. I think the label has already booked us for The South By South West conference. Of course, the tour will follow the release, which will probably be Spring of 2007.
DON: Anything else you'd like to add?
SHERRI RUBBER: I like to drink, I like to fuck.....
