Thine
Eye's Bleed have come from humble beginnings. Starting
in Canada, they pushed their self-titled disc for years.
They then signed to The End records in 2004/2005 and re-released
that album under the title "In The Wake of Separation"
and have been touring non-stop since then. With a spot
on this summer's "Unholy Alliance" tour, these guys are
headed for big things. In a recent chat with Metalcoven.com,
vocalist Justin Wolfe had this to say...
Jordon:
Why thrash, obviously you have more to your sound than
just thrash, but what appeals to you guys about thrash
as a whole?
Justin: We're not really giving ourselves an
exclusively thrash tag, we've got all sorts of sounds
- metalcore, heavy metal, death metal - but there is definitely
thrash in there. I dunno, I mean there's a wide variety
of ages in the band and thrash was the common ground,
like the music we had all listened to. Our thought from
day one was "let's make the band we always wanted to play
in", so we just started out to make the heaviest band
we could, a band that we really wanted to be in and listen
to.
Jordon: So you're on The End records which is quickly
becoming one of the best metal labels, how are they as a
label and how does it feel to be of such a different sound
than the majority of bands on that label?
Justin: It's cool, initially we shopped our
record on our own for a little while, we had recorded
and pressed it on our own long before The End came around
and we sent it out to some labels, sold it at our shows,
out of the trunks of cars type thing. The End was really
cool, they were the first ones to come and talk to us
and be really straight with us from the beginning, they
talked to us like people, not like children and they were
really cool about the music, they weren't so concerned
with the business side of it. It's really cool; at the
same time they are growing as a label we're trying to
grow as a band…we're one of the only bands on that label
that are really adamant about touring. We're really trying
to be the tightest and best band we can be and they're
really helping us out, them and our management. It's a
very diverse label and that's cool, it lets every band
standout and make a name for themselves with the world
and their fans, I think it's going to help us take the
next step, becoming even better as a band.
Jordon: "In The Wake of Separation" has been out for
almost a year now, how do you feel it has performed? Has
it done everything you hoped? Are you happy with the response
and so on?
Justin: Definitely proud of the album, with
the budget that we had it came out really well, we did
it on our own before we even had a label. We're really
proud of it but since then we have really progressed as
a band, we've gotten so much heavier, way, way tighter.
We also have two new members, who are bringing their own
ideas and sounds to the mix. So yeah, we're happy with
the album, but we're definitely due for a new album. We
had all these problems with touring last year, things
would be confirmed and then just before the tour they
got cancelled and so we were kinda laid up doing nothing,
so we've had to tour this album to get people into us
as a band, leave people with something to expect for the
next album, everybody's working better now than we ever
have, we're all getting along really well and everything
is primed for a great experience.
Jordon: You guys are the prototypical road warriors,
touring all the time, is this more to get your name out
there or do you just absolutely love touring?
Justin: Both, really we don't have a whole lot
for us at home, everybody's put everything they had into
this band, physically, financially, emotionally, mentally
there is no real choice, we have to do it, we love to
do it, we just love being out there and being the tightest
band we can be. It's encouraging to play for 500 or 5
people, we need to work, and we feel more at home in the
van than we do working our 9-5 jobs.
Jordon: What has been the best tour so far?
Justin: We did a lot of shitty tours last year,
the first tour we ever did however was definitely best
one, it was the one that helped us get signed. It was
with Kittie, Candiria, 36 Crazyfists and 12 Tribes. It
was our initial big step, we played for 500-1000 every
night, it was a great experience. Then last year we went
to Japan which was amazing.
Jordon: So you're playing the huge Unholy Alliance tour,
what's that feel like? How does it feel to be opening for
Slayer?
Justin: With our experiences last year, we don't
really think anything is true until it's happening, but
yeah, we're trying not to think about it, not to psyche
ourselves out, it's a total dream come true though. We
never thought it was going to happen and it's happening,
we've never done anything this size, I mean this is a
gig that any band would kill for. Put it this way, it's
a tour I couldn't pass up if I wasn't playing it, like
if it was coming anywhere near me, I'd have to go and
see it.
Jordon: How do you feel about the current state of metal?
Justin: Metal is kinda coming back around fullcircle,
which is a good thing to see, you see all the hardcore
bands merging with metal bands and there are all these
different labels, things are getting more heavy, more aggressive,
the kids want something more intense, more heavy and more
aggressive. With Slayer coming off a new album and Lamb
of God getting so big, things are becoming really exciting
and it's good to see the old school metal bands reviving
and all these young bands coming out, it's very cool to
see.
Jordon: How do you feel about the metal scene in Canada?
Justin: The metal scene in Canada is not as
strong as it is the US but there are a lot of bands that
are coming out recently that are doing it. It's hard to
tour in Canada when you are just starting out, that's
why we started in the States.
Jordon: Any plans for a new album? New ideas? New Sounds?
Justin: Right now were supposed to be finishing
the writing of the album but we couldn't turn down this
touring, we finished half of it before we left for the
winter, after the UA tour we'll do one more run, then
hit the studio in the winter, and have an early release
in 2007, musically we're getting heavy and faster, more
aggressive, all this touring has made us tighter and its
really going to show on the album.
Alright Justin, thank you very much for your time and
good luck with the tour this summer, I'm sure it'll be amazing.
