As with all black metal bands these days, there's a constant reminder of just how
boring and repetitive the scene has gotten since its glory days. I've said it
before and I'm saying it again: Black metal is not to be done by people after
the fact, period. It especially shouldn't be tried if you are from the USA
and claim to be "kult, Norse, yadda yadda yadda". Stop already! If you're going to
attempt to sing Satan's praises at least be comprised of other bands that have
been kicking around a while - than you're validated to a certain degree.
Anti-Christian Assault, comprised of members from the bands Nae'blis,
Yggdrasil and Folkearth, has assembled to create a four-song MCD
strictly limited to 500 copies in an attempt to bring back the days of old
when Satan appreciated such services put to music and they've managed to
do a decent job. I wouldn't rank this up there with "De Mysteriis dom
Sathanas" or "In the Nightside Eclipse" but it's okay and is definitely
for the black metal masses of the current regime.
The high-pitched screams of agony are there, the fast tremelo picking is there,
the odes to Lucifer are there, and the Swedenesque feel is there as well. While
I find it to be a solid effort and worth a listen and place in any true BM fan's
arsenal, it simply doesn't set itself apart from everything else Sweden has put
forth since the early 90s (the exception, of course, being Dissection). As I said,
it's a well-done piece of black metal artistry, but unless you need to collect
everything offered in the Scandinavian vein that solidifies the genre post-Venom
try something else BEFORE going after this one. However, being limited to 500 copies
might make that a bit of a decision...it's your call! Either way you won't be too sorry.
