If you have heard of the band Summoning, you know that one of the members is Protector, a.k.a. Richard Lederer. What you may not know about Lederer is that he also has a darkwave project called Die Verbannten Kinder Evas. With a new album from both Summoning and Die Verbannten Kinder Evas, there is no doubt that this past year has been busy for Mr. Lederer.

Dusk and Void Become Alive is Die Verbannten Kinder Evas' first album in seven years and with vocalist Christina Kroustall in tow, Die Verbannten Kinder Evas is what you expect a darkwave group to be, only darker. Those expecting material similar to Summoning will be deeply disappointed; however, if the listener can hold off all expectations until they listen to the album, they will be pleasantly surprised. The music on Dusk and Void Become Alive has a dark and romantic atmosphere, with only the vocals and keyboards providing any kind of musical value. This approach helps add to the darkening effect that Lederer wants in his side project while at the same time, the vocals will haunt the listener throughout the album. Both sets of vocals, provided by Kroustall and Lederer, contribute to the atmosphere it sets up, furthering the band's name, which means "The banished children of Eve" in German. The listener will also feel like they are getting lost, partially because some of the songs feel like they sound the same. Mostly though, the lost feeling is due to the music structure that keeps the listener guessing as to where the beginning and the end are in the songs. The album's songs could use some variety, however subtle they may be, in an effort to keep listeners interested. Overall, the album is not too bad for a darkwave release and provides some good moments.

Die Verbannten Kinder Evas is undoubtedly an unusual project to say the least. Even though it is not a release expected from a great musician like Lederer, it is certainly different and even provides a different perspective. Is is a good thing that Die Verbannten Kinder Evas is not a regular project or else the listener would not be able to put up with the darkwave for long. For those looking for a breather from the harsh climates of the metal scene, give Die Verbanten Kinder Evas a shot.
