Instinct
[Nuclear Blast]

Hungary's Ektomorf released their first album back in 1996, so they've been around for awhile. Sepultura's "Roots" album also came out that year. Coincidence? I sure hope so, 'cause if not, there's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

The music sounds like "Roots" era Sepultura and Soulfly and the vocals are a dead-ringer for Max Cavalera in both tone and rhythm. Song titles like "The Holy Noise" and "Fuck You All" sound like Soulfly song titles. The tribal elements sound like "Roots" era Sepultura/Soulfly, with the exception of the use of the sitar (the one original thing about this band). There's not much that separates Ektomorf from the Cavalera camp aside from a slightly more punky groove and a difference in the styles of breakdowns that Ektomorf incorporates, playing them less groove oriented than the band they emulate.

I hate doing reviews where I hardly have anything nice to say about the band, but if it needs to be done, then I'm obligated to do so. There's almost nothing original here and Ektomorf didn't even bother to copy a less distinctive band than Soulfly. A damn shame.
