It’s strange, there always seems to be a trend where all the quality metal bands come from at a given time and yet off in the background, away from focused eyes, the French metal scene just keeps popping out new bands and new albums. I suppose the same could hold true everywhere, but the French just seem to be so good at it.
Evohé are a relatively new band who have just released their debut last September. It’s always a pleasure to find new bands who are already at the top of the game even with just one disc recorded. There were a couple demos previous to this album going back to 2000 so I guess the band isn’t all that new, but I’m sure you still get the point. The music presented to us on Tellus Mater is crisp but far from that over produced shine that so many detest. A haze of light fuzz covers the guitars which I find to be quite pleasant. The majority of the songs are fast black metal with great vocals. A few more of the sparse acoustic bits that pop up every now and then would have been appreciated but I shouldn’t complain since what we’ve been given is pretty good regardless.
The cover is really neat too showing a strange dead and frozen forest which is oddly green. It’s simple looking yet captivating. The lyrics in the book can be difficult to make out because they’re usually close to the same color as the background, but it’s done on purpose and doesn’t prevent one from making the lyrics out if close attention is paid.
I’m impressed by these guys, and will now wait faithfully for a follow up.
