Platters
of Splatter
[Relapse Records] Simply peruse the shelves of Best Buy and one is bound to find countless bands releasing their demo, rare, poorly recorded live versions, or soundtrack-only material as bonuses on their “reissued” or “remastered” studio albums. This usually equals exciting little tidbits for the rabid fan or purist while irritating the person who just bought the original version last month. But there are two bands that have bucked this trend: Impaled and Exhumed. Both goregrind bands have released albums that feature not only their demo material but their often lost or limited split-album songs. Impaled has thus far released 2 coy EPs of the aforementioned type. However, Exhumed went for broke and released a double CD (56 songs!)* chock full of all of their demo, split, compilation, and tribute material with extensive artwork and awesome production tweaking (curtsey of Pig Destroyer’s Scott Hull). “Platters of Splatter” is a hefty heap of gore-drenched goodness from both the crypts and the obscure releases. While the casual fan of goregrind or Exhumed will be completely overwhelmed, rabid fans will jones for this extensive double disc set. Everything is here: From their horribly sanguine beginnings to most recent sonic split material with Gadget and Sanity’s Dawn. The production on the split tracks is typical for most grindcore bands. But hats...err... heads go off to Scott Hull for taking the tin out of all the demo material from the early 90’s. While some would complain that there are two similar versions of both “Vagitarian” and “Grotesque Purified Brains,” their complaints should be silenced by the totally tubular “The Exquisite Flavor of Gastro-Anal-Tripe” and creepily comical re-hacking of King Diamond’s “No Presents for Chrismas” (complete with feculent falsetto). If last year’s spectacular “Anatomy is Destiny” wasn’t enough to keep your gore-loving heart pulsating, “Platters of Splatter” should hold you over until Exhumed’s next studio album. Remember folks, “Platters of Splatter” is compiled of “Ten Years of Gore F**king Metal!!!” *While out tour with Cannibal Corpse and Hypocrisy earlier this year, Exhumed was selling a 3-Disc version of “Platters of Splatter.” Unfortunately this reviewer did not have enough spare sonic stamina or intestinal fortitude to “cheek” a copy to bring to the vomitorium... err... slam pit of Harpo’s. |
