[Liquid 8] OK, OK, I know what you're thinking. "Ew, Fear Factory? Are they still around? Ew, did you hear Digimortal? EW. They haven't done anything good since Demanufacture" But seriously, their new album isn't a big ugly piece of shit like their previous abominations. In fact, it's actually very good. No seriously, it wasn't just decent compared to their shitty albums, it stacks up too both Demanufacture and Soul of a New Machine. Gone is the nu-metal sound, gone is they hack attempt at rapping, gone is the whiny Dino…. The old bassist, Christian Wolbers has replaced Dino at guitar, and the bassist from Strapping Young Lad, Byron Stroud (long time friends of Fear Factory) has filled in for Christian's former duties. So, after all that shuffling they managed to pump out a great album which really should have been the follow up Obsolete, though it's miles ahead of that album too. Almost all of the songs have the trademark super loud double bass from drummer, Ray Herrera. Of course sometimes it's overused, but that's pretty much to be expected from any Fear Factory disc, and things wouldn't be the same otherwise. Burton Bell's vocals are mostly good throughout. The growls are as well done as they ever were, but the clean vocal areas have a few minor issues. Mostly they are mostly well sung, I am just not sure if he is up to it anymore, or what, because there are some times they just don't sound like they maybe should. Thankfully those are few and far between, and it's not something I really noticed after repeated listens. I don't know about anyone else, but I had entirely given up on Fear Factory a LONG time ago. I didn't ever think they were going to return to making truly good cyber thrash ever again, so this was a nice surprise for me. I have since been spinning my older Fear Factory records a lot more because of it too, so that's pretty nifty. I can only hope they don't repeat mistakes from the past and follow up this one with a dud. Anyway, if you like Demanufacture, I am certain you'll find this to your liking. |
