The Second Great Awakening
[Nuclear Blast] From Hollywood, California comes a band that could be Nuclear Blast's big break. Fireball Ministry mixes uncomplicated, straight-forward stoner rock with a touch of glam metal for a very strong hard rock attack that could easily rocket them to commercial success. It just seems like everyone who likes good ol' fashioned rock n' roll will love this album. They very well could bring the Nuclear Blast name into a much more mainstream audience. For the most part, you could say that The Second Great Awakening sounds like a really good Ozzy record. Not only do the vocals of the Rev. James A. Rota II feel very similar to Ozzy's approach, but the music also has that obvious Sabbath influence mixed with a more modern, commercial rock feel. However, this is only a superficial similarity. I can imagine Ozzy fans loving Fireball Ministry, but I don't think you'd have to like Ozzy to like these guys. I really don't like Ozzy at all, but I love Fireball Ministry. Their biggest distinction and the main reason that I find them superior is that their 70's doom influences are the main focus of every song. That means that they keep it heavy at all times and their focus is on strong grooves that compliment the excellent, laid back melodies. This means that you can expect some simple, but infectious grooves and plenty of sing-a-long choruses that really work without ever sounding pop. Everything about this album is solid and the songs have a way of sneaking into your brain. Their catchiness is subtle, but strong. Basically, this is a solid rock album with great production, plenty of integrity, and memorable songs. A very enjoyable listen. Support the Ministry and help spread the word that good rock music is alive and well. |
