Fleshgore are a brutal death metal band from the Ukraine, and This Dark Reign has just re-released their punishing debut album “Killing Absorption”. It’s an absolute monster of an album that while not at all groundbreaking, solidly showcases the band’s proficiency at creating mighty works of the utmost intensity.

”Killing Absorption” was originally released in 2003. This is, I believe, is the third time around for the album, but in all honesty not that much really changes in the realm of death metal of the ultra-brutal variety, so the songs here truly sound as though they had been recorded a few months ago rather than almost four years ago. Unbridled brutality is definitely Fleshgore’s forte. After the requisite ominous sounds of mass agony in the opening seconds of the album, the psychotic sonics begin, and for the next half hour they just don’t stop. The band makes much use, naturally, of insane tempos, and blast-beats abound though they are not constant throughout as is so often the case with this type of music. The songs are broken up nicely with alternating blasts and slower, thrashier mosh sections accentuated with maniacal and evil-sounding leads. All of this is reigned over by guttural vocals of the lowest register gurgle much in the Rahmer style. The songs are understandably quite similar both to themselves and to other bands’ material, but a few of the tracks like the very thrashy “Devoured by Helminthes”, and the rhythmically impressive “Infernal Earth” stand out as distinct, and are the best on the album.

”Killing Absorption” is definitely a solid release, and Fleshgore will most likely improve their fan base with this re-release of their first album of intense brutal death. The album will unquestionably appeal to fans of the genre, particularly fans of bands like Mortician, Dying Fetus, Deeds of Flesh, and Blood Ritual.
