Love's
Burial Ground
[Adipocere Records] "This album was written under direct influence of and dedicated to Negativity." That quote from the back of Forgotten Tomb's latest album pretty much sums up the band's focus. This is some highly depressed, suicidal black metal guaranteed to ruin your happy day… and you will like it. The main problem with the majority of black metal today is the obsession with being true to the scene over being true to yourself. Forgotten Tomb don't seem to care what anyone else thinks because they hate themselves too much to care. They play doomy black metal and even wear corpse paint, but they aren't satanic and they actually have good production. They aren't about thoughtlessly hating your fellow man so much as hating yourself first and letting that hate flow out from you. It's more suicidal than homicidal, you might say. The songs on this disc are actually quite long and involved as each of the six main songs is around ten minutes long. They just wallow in misery as the speed of this album is mainly in the slow to mid-paced category. And though there are some faster songs, they remain involved and deep. Also, the atmospheres of doom and misery are predominant no matter what the speed of the actual song is. Don't be fooled by the song lengths. The songs aren't repetitive, nor are they overly complicated. They are only as complex as they need to be and wallow in each emotion just long enough to make you really feel it before they move on. To add to the darkness, Forgotten Tomb enlisted the aid of Nordvargr of satanic noise/ambient artists MZ412 to compose an intro, intermezzo, and outro for the album. I have to say that I'm surprised to be recommending an album that is so blatantly black metal, but what can I say? Forgotten Tomb do everything right. They somehow manage to take the dark, cold aesthetic of early 90's black metal and give it their own spin while actually having good production and good song writing. You can't ask for more than that from your black metal. |
