Forest Of Impaled
Forward The Spears
[Red Stream]

American black metal has never recieved much respect. Bands such as Absu, Judas Iscariot, and Usurper have released some great music, but they just don't get the coverage or respect of their Scandinavian brethren.

Enter Forest Of Impaled, who on their latest release, Forward The Spears, deserve not only to be heard, but to be admired for raising the bar for American black metal bands.

Forest Of Impaled's overall sound is black metal, with brutal death and thrash elements mixed in. While not entirely original, they have come up with a huge sound using only two guitars, bass, and drums (save for a brief orchestral introduction). This epic sound, combined with some great lyrics, make Forward The Spears one of 2003's best releases.

Forward The Spears has a spacious and clear production. The thing one notices first is the drum sound:huge, deep, and clear. Drummer Duane Timlin (Divine Empire, Judas Iscariot, Broken Hope) turns in a mesmerizing performance here, with stop-on-a-dime time changes, super fast blastbeats, and a great sense of groove. His fills and beats are creative and masterfully executed. Vocals (courtesy of bassist Marcus M.Kolar) range from black metal shreiks to deep death growls to some spoken parts.Overall, a fine performance by Mr.Kolar. Guitars are well-played and well-recorded, as is the bass guitar.

If you're a black metal fan, you owe it to yourself to check out Forward The Spears.  Brutal, creative, and heavy as hell, it just might give American black metal the respect it deserves.
