I had to jump up and check the liner notes of Seattle, WA band
Midnight
Idols’ self-released debut album “We Rule the Night” when it came on
because
I thought I might have misread the release date the first time around.
Lo
and behold, it did say “2006” not “1984”. My mistake, though a
thoroughly
honest one, as the album has the distinct sound and feel of being the
lost
recording of some early eighties Hollywood, CA bar band. ”We Rule the Night” is a collection of fast, loud, ugly tunes about
the
finer things in life: drinking, rocking, smoking pot, and fucking.
Gleefully lowbrow lyrics and a sound more dated than classic make this
the
perfect soundtrack for pool halls, beer soaked rural dive bars, and
Camaros.
The songs are on the simplistic side, and not without an expected
amount
of predictability, but it’s definitely all in the name of a good time.
On
very first listen, I was more than able to correctly guess when and
where
the “Come on!!!” and “Alright!!!” shouts were going to be. Regardless,
“We
Rule the Night” is still a mostly enjoyable, if not complicated listen,
and
fans of early Motley Crue as well as the rest of the gruffer side of
early
glam metal, and all the people waiting patiently to be disappointed by
“Chinese Democracy” will have fun getting drunk along with the boys in
Midnight Idols. |
