Terrorist - Nekronaut Pt. 1
[Season Of Mist]

Ever wondered what a Black Metal version of GWAR may sound like? I'm guessing you probably haven't, but let's pretend you have for a moment, okay? Okay. R. Nattefrost, who used to be (or maybe still is) in the mighty Carpathian Forest (Get "Strange Old Brew". It rules!), decided to take it upon himself to form a Black Metal band that just doesn't take itself too seriously. Do I like these non-Carpathian Forest results when it comes to the new Nattefrost album "Terrorist - Nekronaut Part 1"? Well, yes and no. Let me tell you why.

The music on the album is horrid. Raw Black Metal with a few Thrash influences in nature, everything is just way to tinny sounding. It's played fast just for the sake of playing fast, and there's not hardly and musicianship at all. Hell, the album even becomes almost like a Noise project at times, and I want no part of that genre! What I do like about the album is its sense of humor. Natterost himself is quoted as saying this music is "total necro and narrow minded Black Metal...". I totally agree! Just look at the song titles, and you'll see what I mean about the sense of humor. One "song" is nothing but Nattefrost shitting and pissing into a toilet. But hey, at least he washes his hands afterwards. Another song has someone cutting up a woman with some sort of saw, another one he's puking his guts out, etc. This is just some of the GWAR-esque childishness I like about the album. The comedy on the album gets a 9/10, but alas, the music doesn't ever grab me, so all in all I never really appreciate the album fully just based on the humor of it.

The vocals are insane, shrieking, over the top and quite annoying actually. I know this style is done for effect, but damn... it's irritating. One song has Nattefrost singing in a clean style, which is quite hilarious in a good way. And he whistles gleefully in the same song, which makes me think the man is quite mad. Most of the lyrics are in English, but there are some on in Nattefrost's native tongue. The lyrics deal with anything and everything Nattefrost can think of to make fun of. Look to the song titles for a hint at the lyrical content!

The production is very mediocre and could have been a lot better. I've heard worse productions, but seeing as though this is C.D. is pressed with 48 bit High Resolution technology, you think they'd have striven for a better sound. But... I guess not!

The cover art is just a photo of Nattefrost posing on the cover. I've heard there are two versions of this album. One censored and one uncensored. I have no idea which one I have. The version I have shows Nattefrost standing before a large set of doors with something in his hands. It looks to me like he's holding the infamous inanimate carbon rod from The Simpsons. What else is in the actual C.D. I wouldn't know as the promo I got just had the front cover art and a photo of Nattefrost naked in a tub on the back, bottle of booze in hand. I've heard the photos and artwork in the uncensored version are quite controversial, so knowing that makes me want to check it out for myself! Note to record labels: How are reviewers supposed comment on the full C.D. package like artwork, liner notes and lyrics when these are not included with the promo?

I gave this album a rather low score, but I still recommend it to raw Black Metal fans that are in need for a good laugh at someone else's expense. I love GWAR, and Nattefrost captured the humor of GWAR on this album perfectly. Too bad the music isn't as good as GWAR though. One thing to note is that the running time of this album is misleading. The last song is a real long ordeal with a lot of dead space in it. There's a few minutes of noise in the beginning, dead space, someone talks for a few seconds later on, more dead space, a bit more talking, etc.. Actual running time is more like just over thirty five minutes.
