Italy’s Nefaruim know exactly what they are capable of playing, and they know exactly what they want to play; blistering black metal. Their debut album ( released 8 years after their forming!) is an unrelenting onslaught of speed, blasphemy and brutality. There is not a slow part or even mid tempo paced song on this album. The slowest moment we get it a 30 second “hidden track” after the last track. Pretty much everything else moves along at a blasting speed, similar to 1349.
As with the above mentioned band, the first thing you notice upon listening is the drumming. Summum Algor does an absolutely amazing job on this album that would have most black metal freaks turning their head in shock. The guitars as well are expertly played. I guess taking 8 years before your album is put together after becoming an established act one would expect that the band would play pretty well in sync with each other and that they would play with the precision you find here. The music itself is reminiscent of other well known bands like Naglfar, Immortal,1349 and other well produced, mostly keyboard-less black metal bands. The music is melodious at times but it is handled by the guitar as opposed to clean vocals or synths. The problem is that Nefarium is no where near as good as song writers as these other bands. This album is rather straight-forward. There is nothing in here that really catches you off guard. And most importantly and perhaps most devastating, there is no variation what-so-ever between songs. All we have is an album that shouldn’t really pass for a full length (30 minutes?!?) of way too much blasting and unmemorable riffs. Reviewing albums like this is always so difficult for me. I totally recognize the skill level of the musicians. It is brutal and pleasing to the ears. Yet, I can’t recommend this whole heartedly because of the simple fact that this album just doesn’t stick with you 5 minutes after you listened to it. I know these guys have their heart in the right places, but unless you are an absolute avid black metal fan who can’t buy up albums fast enough, I would have to say pass on this one. | |
