First of all, in this day and age of metal, I have a difficult time taking anything seriously that ends in “…of Doom.” It’s just goofy sounding and it’s been used and over used too many times. So when I saw that the title of this demo from Sweden’s Portrait was “Black Hole of Doom” I reflexively rolled my eyes. Not that I was going to judge them on that alone, but that isn’t a good way to start. But anyway, let’s get to the music.

Portrait plays a melodic style of classic metal with a singer who is desperately trying to sound as close to King Diamond as possible and I can’t help but think that naming the band Portrait was not a coincidence, get me? Musically, they are very competent and are clearly fans of the old school style of classic heavy metal. Nice soloing, good drum work and classic riffing, even if somewhat tired and rehashed. The production is very demo-ish. Kind of flat and hollow and sounds like it was recorded in a warehouse.

Overall, there isn’t much to say about this three song demo other than it makes me want to throw in some old Mercyful Fate. With some good production, Portrait should have a decent career ahead of them should they decide to add a few fresh ideas into the mix and keep the classic sound.
