Victory. Intolerance. Mastery
[Red Stream] Wow, what an angry, angry group of musicians Revenge are. You'd be best to leave their newest album "Victory.Intolerance.Mastery" alone if you're looking for a nice easy metal album to pass your time. Revenge won't give this to you. In fact, if you're a fan of weak music they would not only fail to fulfill your needs, but they're liable to take your face and smash it into a cement wall a few times before using what's remaining of your barley animate corpse to perform some bizarre Satanic rite, all the while making you get your first glimpse of hell by making you listen to their new album over and over as they praise the almighty dark lord and slash your body into various sized bits which they will then sell to the Oscar Meyer company for hot dog meat so they can get beer money. "Victory.Intolerance.Mastery" is without a doubt one of the most over the top and brutal albums I've ever heard. Death metal for the most part, they also have a few thrash and black metal nuances to liven things up a bit. What this album really reminds me of is early Carcass meets General Surgery. Just real punishing and relentless and extreme ugliness emanates from your speakers, and if there were children around I'm sure they would be crying after hearing such unhindered hatred such as that which resides on this album. Hey, when it comes to the music the title of this album says it all! It's not without its downfalls though. At times the album is just so brutal and insane that at times it falls in and out of what would be called structured music, which is something I usually don't care for. In other words, it becomes a total blur of metal noise every so often. Even more so than Carcass or General Surgery's music actually. Some people I'm sure will love this album more because of this. Hell, I really like it even, but I am always finding myself wondering if it might sound better if it wasn't so over the top. Probably not, since this factor is the focus of the music. I guess when you come down to it, the only thing that is really fast is the drums. When these are in full swing, they kind of overpower everything else going on, but this is the desired effect of the band I'm sure. The vocals are also very reminiscent of older Carcass albums like "Symphony Of Sickness" as in there's two guttural death metal styles vocals - one higher pitched one and one so low and guttural that you'd think Satan was the guest vocalist. The lyrics I cannot comment on as they are printed in the booklet, but I can guarantee they are not about flowers, sunshine or love. The production is decent, but I wish the vocals would have been put a bit more in the background as they tend to kind of overpower everything else. Aside form that, everything about the production is great. Well, the drums tend to be loud when the blast beat effect is in full swing, but that's more or less from the intensity of the drumming and not the production itself. The packaging has a very 1980's thrash metal album feel. Especially the "Revenge" logo which is all done with spikes giving it a very mid 80's thrash look. The cover shows a barbed wire shield deal with a few crossed daggers as well. The inside of the booklet (as stated above) unfortunately does not have the lyrics, but it does have a photo of each band member as well as some other pieces of politically incorrect art. "Victory.Intolerance.Mastery" certainly fills a void left behind by Carcass. Fans of Carcass and General Surgery will definitely want to add this album to their heavy metal "To Get" lists. As for people who like their death/black/thrash metal only in the nice, sweet and melodic vein, you'd be advised to pass this one up because this album is the antithesis to everything you hold near and dear to your heart. |
