Holy Hell
[Candlelight]

This whole batch of Candlelight promos (Rob Rock, Masterplan, and Space Odyssey) makes me want to listen to Dio. So this is exactly what I am going to do as soon as I am done with this review. Maybe earlier. Why does everyone sound like Dio these days? Hmmm? Maybe I am imagining things, maybe it's a trend but all three of the aforementioned have evoked the Dio sound and awakened a craving.

Rob Rock has been around for a long time. Holy Hell is his latest offering released in the US by Candlelight. Props to the label for including many extras on the promo such as the video for I'm a Warrior, a making of featurette, pictures, etc.

The songs on the album are of the pleasant, melodic, appealing variety and Rob's voice is very polished and a good match. On the other hand the CD sounds a bit dated and predictable. It does not break any new ground, but is rather what I refer to as comfort music - something you can turn to time and again. It does not make you think, but it calms and soothes due to familiarity.

The opener Slayer of Souls starts out with a punching guitar riff. Coupled with the title, I was expecting to hear harsher vocals and on the first listen was caught off-guard. It's a damn good riff, though! Calling Angels is definitely a strong, catchy song that has been stuck in my head for a while. The track that makes the CD worth owning is the closer - Move on. That one features the best front man in all of music - the incomparable Tobias Sammet of Edguy. Now this is a good duet - the voices complement each other and blend well.

The fans of melodic vocals and Rob Rock himself should be more than pleased with this one. I am still thinking of Dio, though... And yearning for the upcoming Rocket Ride by Edguy.
