The
Slog Of War
[Dead Ed Records] I find myself wondering how the hell a metal zine got a CD like this for review. Roosevelt's Plan play what is often referred to as "dirty rock 'n roll", something far more at home in the punk scene than amongst metalheads. On the plus side, these guys are competent musicians and do occasionally have some nice licks. The first track, "Afterbirth", has a nice groove to it and "Bleed" opens with a nice acoustic ditty. Unfortunately, Roosevelt's Plan utilizes a vocal style that is both atonal and off-key, while the song writing is often dull and boring. There are three songs that go over nine minutes long on this album and none of them go anywhere. It's as if they were written long for the express purpose of being long. The recording itself sounds more like that of a demo than an album and the drums sound like they were recorded in someone's garage. And why the hell they used some obnoxious phone message, wrote some background music for it and called it "One Eyed Horace Wants His Pimp Cup" is completely beyond me. These guys aren't bad musicians, but their song writing skills leave much to be desired, thus resulting in an album that is annoying in some parts and sleep inducing in others. |
