This is interesting. Every time I look up some information on
Slovenia’s Sabaium, the term goth metal keeps coming up which is in stark
contradiction to the contents of their third full-length album entitled
“Gravity Devine.” Either they started as a gothic metal band or there
are a lot of confused people out there online. On the other hand, the music found on “Gravity Devine” is somewhat
genre defying as it is. A very groovy take on melodic death metal with
lots of atmospheric keyboards in the background. Each song plods along
at a methodic pace and never breaks from the formula save for a few
moments of a speedy double bass beat and the occasional instance where the
keyboards surface to the forefront. Each however, is short-lived and
never significant enough to change the flow of the album. Thick,
chugging riffs dominate the album with a duo of vocals switching from a
mid-growl to a higher pitched rasp. The occasional semi-solo/mild lead will
show its face, but they are few and far between. But whether or not “Gravity Devine” is difficult to place into a
single genre, it isn’t difficult to conclude that it is extremely
uninteresting and weak. There is virtually nothing to get excited over. Not
until the tenth track was there anything that left even a slight lasting
memory. That said, the album is quite focused. Sabaium are very sure
of how they want the album to sound and in what direction they intend
it to go. I just am of the opinion that that direction will lead them
nowhere. |
