“We Hate You and Hope You Die.” What a great way to greet the listener. Between the album title and the cover art, my expectations were low. However, I gave the disc many listens and enjoyed it.

Ultralord play stoner sludge, and while it’s usually love it or hate it with this style of metal, they do a good job of avoiding some of the pitfalls I associate with the genre. The music is far less monotones than many of the other bands of this type and the vocals are not as extreme. You can comprehend the majority of what is being sung and the songs all have a great pace.

The production was handled by Vince Burke (of Beaten Back To Pure) and is more than adequate. The mix never sounds muddy and everything flows great. Ben Hogg (also of Beaten Back To Pure) is featured doing the vocals on the last track. I’m sure that his inclusion will help garner some attention for the band, but I feel that his vocals seem a bit out of place on the disc. It’s not a bad song, I like it, but his vocals are so much different than Andy Strickland’s that it just doesn’t fit with the rest of the disc.

This is a good cd that I like more as I give it more spins. The tempo changes help keep me interested as they shift between mid paced sludge, up tempo thrash/crossover and some doom drenched march parts. With any luck they will hit the road soon and I’ll get a chance to see them live.
