Well somebody has been taking lessons from the likes of Jari Mäenpää! Unsilent Phenomenon plays death metal of the extremely melodic variety and draws clear and direct influence from the land of Finland’s throng of similarly related acts. Showing signs of Children of Bodom, Wintersun, Skyfire and the like in their sound, they should be an extremely riveting listen for any fans of those said bands as these guys are even better.

Unsilent Phenomenon has found a little niche that nobody has yet to come by and fill yet with epic sweeping soundscapes and interesting riffs during the slower to mid paced sections of this album (take Prince of Darkness for a prime a example). That’s surely not to say that they can’t write some hyper speed neo-classic riffs derived almost directly from Alexi Laiho himself but with a touch more of speed than him, with a bit more of a creative edge. The Renouncement is quite a roller-coaster ride for such a cookie cutter genre. It ranges from technical and speedy melodic death metal to dark gothic passages full of intelligent vocal effects and grim riffery. Even while vastly swaying out of their primary genre at times…they remain most often with a core sound of melodic death metal. I must say I’m quite impressed with the amount of atmosphere they’ve laid onto this disc as well, because once again, that’s an unusual but welcome aspect to this genre’s stylistic qualifications. And the solos, my God, the solo’s! They are some of the most memorable head-banging worthy I’ve heard a good long time, and there is more than a sufficient amount of them as they are laced efficiently into each and every song!

I can’t really comment on what the cover art is taken from…but it appears like it would suit a Thy Primordial cover just fine as well! It’s a nice cover of what appears to be stone statues before vaulted ceilings and pillar work of the Roman creed. I could be completely off on whether it is a Roman piece of artwork, but the architecture is greatly reminiscent of the style portrayed by the picture supplied here. I believe the statue closest to the viewer in fact supposed to be Jesus…but alas I cannot be sure.

Unfortunately for some people though, they see this album as nothing more than a new Russian band that has become another clone of Children of Bodom. I’ve seen a few reviews in which they bashed this band simply for belonging to the same genre as them…it’s really quite stupid, since aside from the opening track none of them are even remotely comparable to Children of Bodom in any way. I’d say to definitely check these guys out for yourself and decide. Seeing as I haven’t liked Alexi Laiho’s work now for a few years running…it’s obviously not that similar if I highly enjoy this album.

Unsilent Phenomenon is much catchier than their peers, much more talented, and much more original. If you are getting tired of consistently hearing the same thing over and over and over again from this section of the metal world…pick this up now because it’s leagues above refreshing. I can only hope they have a new full length in the works as we speak…but sadly there is barely any information on these guys whatsoever. All we can do is hope for now…but in the mean time, listening to this album never gets old.
