Doom Capital: Maryland/DC Heavy Rock Underground
[Crucial Blast] From Crucial Blast Records comes a compilation showcasing the top doom/stoner bands of the Washington DC and Maryland area. The comp features a rare Clutch song as well as the first new studio track from Unorthodox in over ten years. Highlights include The Hidden Hand, the new band of doom god Wino (Obsessed, St Vitus, Spirit Caravan, etc) and Los Tres Pesados a stoner/doom supergroup of sorts featuring members of Clutch, Earthride, and Unorthodox. I also discovered some bands that piqued my interest. Internal Void and Life Beyond were probably the bands that stood out most to me due to their exceedingly high energy. I was surprised by the progressive touches of Unorthodox. I was absolutely leveled by the incredibly crushing sound of Leviathan AD a band that truly lives up to its name yet remains totally melodic. The southern rock psychedelic doom of King Valley took a few listens for me to get into, but now I'm fully impressed. All in all, Doom Capital is a good sampler with lots of interesting tracks and a few tracks that… well, let me know which bands to avoid (Countershaft and War Injun, I'm looking in your direction). It accomplishes what a comp is supposed to accomplish: it introduces you to new bands. I personally found about a half dozen that I intend to look into. If you're a fan of the 70's influenced stoner doom, you should check this out. |
