[Ipecac Records] Okay… Venomous Concept is a hardcore band featuring Kevin Sharp (Brutal Truth, Damaged), Buzz Osbourne (Melvins, Fantomas), Shane Embury (Napalm Death, Lock Up, Brujeria), and Danny Herrera (Napalm Death). Oscar Garcia (Terrorizer/Nausea) shows up and drops some background vocals. Now you might notice I said Venomous Concept is a hardcore band. Well, it is basically is grindcore guys trying to play traditional hardcore without sounding like grindcore. Or in the words of Kevin Sharp, a tribute to the hardcore band Poison Idea. Venomous Concept. Eh? How’s that for witty!? It doesn’t pay off and only people living under a rock can’t hear that Venomous Concept sounds like rejected Naplam Death riffs slowed down just a tad with standard hardcore themed lyrics (see “Life’s Fine” and “Group Hug”). Had these gentleman injected some serious creativity and experience from their previous bands, Venomous Concept could have been more of a gem. I can’t help but feel sorry for Danny Herrera, he must have been bored to death beating out the same tempo pattern for every song. In the end, this super group concept is more boring than venomous. Every song sounds exactly the same and clocks in around a minute and a half. And making fun of punk and rock stars is only cool for about 2 seconds because just about every hardcore band makes fun of punks and rock stars these days. So I don’t get why Venomous Concept thinks they are any better. The collective of Venomous Concept may have the clout, but they don’t offer up anything with a bite. If you want hardcore sounding grindcore, go with a band like Genocide SS (or is it Genocide Super Stars?). At least they seem to be more original and enjoyable. The only thing Venomous Concept is poisoning is your CD player. Okay, the song “Run Around” is pretty cool and if they would have added an “Oi oi oi!” I might have given this album more points based on humor. |
