Unfortunately, sometimes plans don’t work out despite the best efforts from a band producing a CD. Visions of the Night’s new EP Externalizing Caligination should be enjoyable, fascinating, and downright awesome. It should grab hold and make you hunger for more after the short 4 songs are finished. It should do a lot of things and it’s really too bad that it just doesn’t.

It’s not for lack of trying. The songs on this EP are well written and there is even a video for the first track which while is shot on a hilariously low budget and is rather cheesy is still very fun. So what’s the problem? Well mainly the production just prevents me from getting into much of anything on this CD. The songs are well played, there’s no doubt these guys are talented musicians. I can’t be sure if the sound present on the disc is as they had intended, or if it’s a mistake or the result of a low budget. Whatever it was, it really prevents enjoyment of the CD, for me anyway. Everything is a muddy jumbled mess with the fuzz from the guitars covering the rest of the sounds on the album, and not in a good way.

Aside from the production the blackened death presented on the disc is all in all pretty good. The vocals are varied between deep death growls and higher pitched black rasps. There is good use of keyboards to create atmosphere and these guys have some neat riffs and blast sections.

I hate to rag on a band as I have for something that might be out of their control. It’s tough to say, but I’ve only got what I’ve got to judge them on. This is a decent EP, but not something I’d go out of my way to get.
