Primal Massacre
[Metal Blade]

Sweden’s Vomitory isn’t a trend setting band, nor are they exceptional enough to have elitist metalhead’s drooling for more. But what Vomitory does offer is a brilliant, well-crafted hybrid style old school death metal that perfectly fuses grind and melody to churn out guttural tales of murder and mayhem.

“Primal Massacre,” the bands’ third release for Metal Blade and fifth release overall, features the band sticking to their gore-laden guns. This is no-frills death metal that does the job well by giving seasoned death metal fans what they want. Vomitory seem to take their influence from classic death metal and grindcore bands of the early 90’s. Instead of the whirlwind of blast beats and mathematical guitars that litter most current death metal act, Vomitory focuses on fusing grindcore style guitar work with the perfect hint of Swedish-famed melody. Instead of destroying the music with a wall of breakneck tempos, each song is peppered with the perfect dose of blast within the overall speed of the music.

The production is heavy and thick but it accentuates the music perfectly. The drums have a natural sound and the guitars are produced at the perfect depth for maximal sonic pleasure. Tracks like “Gore Apocalypse” and “Autopsy Extravaganza” are true anthems of classic death metal. No song tops the four-minute mark and each song seems to be a perfectly packaged macabre tale. Lyrically, Vomitory keeps things bloody with tales of war, homicides, and the occasional gutting. While the lyrics for “Chainsaw Surgery” are cliché, they reflect what the band is trying to achieve.

The weakest aspect of “Primal Massacre” could be bassist/vocalist Erik Runqvist’s delivery. At times his vocals are a bit too guttural and barely float above the guitar work.

In all, Vomitory prove to be quite sadistically stellar death metal group that can pleasingly assault eardrums and pacifists. Their non avant-garde attitude should please fans of Cannibal Corpse and early Unleashed looking for a death metal album to unlock their murderous metal fantasies.
