Windir
Likferd
[Head Not Found]

Windir has been around for a few years now but have failed to really rise out of the crowded pile of black metal bands. But hopefully with their fourth release Likferd more people will begin to take notice because what Windir has achieved with Likferd is absolutely brilliant.

While not reshaping or rewriting the book of what black metal is Windir just mange to compose excellent songs that just demand your attention. Their style of black metal is a healthy dosage of unrelenting and chaotic drumming, smooth and fast guitar riffing, plenty of melodic leads, occasional keyboard melodies and the standard black metal singing with an occasional clean choir chant. Throw in the occasional folk touch and the final result is a truly epic and majestic journey.

Highlights include the rousing "Blodssvik", that features excellent melodic riffs, a great keyboard presence and the chance for the bass to be showcased, or the epic "Fagning", with its fuzzy folk passage, a grand male choir chant and a beautiful melodic solo that beings at 5:25 that leads to a tranquil orchestral piece before it gets heavier again.

Without a doubt Likferd is one of the best releases of the year and hopefully now more people will begin to pay attention to these Norwegians.
